Medicare Advantage, also known as Part C, is a type of Medicare-approved health plan offered by private insurance companies. These plans provide all of your Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) benefits, and often add more, like prescription drug coverage, dental, vision, hearing, and fitness perks. On the surface, it can sound like a simpler solution: everything in one plan, often with low or even $0 premiums. But these plans work differently than Original Medicare, and it’s important to understand how they’re structured before you enroll.
When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, your benefits are administered by the insurance company, not the federal Medicare system. You'll still have access to Medicare-covered services, but you’ll now use the plan’s network of doctors and facilities, follow its rules, and carry its member ID card. You may need referrals for specialists, and some services like outpatient procedures, MRIs, or home health care may require prior authorization. On the plus side, many plans include added benefits and built-in drug coverage that would otherwise require separate policies under Original Medicare.
For many people, these plans offer a more simplified and affordable way to manage their Medicare coverage. One of the biggest benefits is the annual out-of-pocket maximum. Something Original Medicare doesn’t provide. That means even in a tough health year, there’s a cap on how much you’ll pay out of pocket.

Lower monthly premiums, sometimes as low as $0 (You still pay your Part B premium)
Built-in prescription drug coverage (In most plans)
Extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and fitness memberships
One card, one plan to manage your healthcare needs
Annual out-of-pocket limit that helps protect against major medical bills
These plans aren't a perfect fit for everyone. Since provider networks are often limited by ZIP code, you’ll want to make sure your doctors are in-network. If you travel often or have multiple specialists, you may find the plan's restrictions frustrating. And because plans are managed privately, coverage details, costs, and benefits can change every year.
Medicare Advantage can be a great choice for people who want extra benefits, are comfortable using a provider network, and like having everything under one plan. But it’s not for everyone, and we’re here to help you decide if it’s the right path for you.
Make sure you understand how your prescriptions fit in. Let’s talk about how Part D coverage works, with or without a Medicare Advantage plan.
