Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap)

Filling the Gaps in Original Medicare

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) offers solid coverage, but it still leaves you exposed to deductibles, copays, and 20% coinsurance with no cap on out-of-pocket costs. That’s where Medicare Supplement plans, also called Medigap, come in.

These plans are offered by private insurance companies and are designed to help pay for what Original Medicare doesn’t. They don’t replace your Medicare; they work alongside it, helping you budget for healthcare costs with more predictability and peace of mind.

How It Works

When you have a Medicare Supplement plan, Medicare still pays its share of covered services. Then your Medigap plan kicks in to cover all or part of what’s left like deductibles, coinsurance, or copays. That means fewer surprise bills and more financial protection when you need care.

You’ll keep your freedom to choose any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare. No networks, no referrals, and no surprise limitations based on your ZIP code.

Plan Comparisons

Medigap plans are standardized by the federal government, which means Plan G from one insurance company will offer the same core benefits as Plan G from another. The difference lies in price and customer service, not the coverage itself.

Below is a breakdown of some key Medigap plans and what they typically help cover:

Plan G

Most Comprehensive for New Enrollees

Covers everything Original Medicare doesn't except the Part B deductible. Popular for those who want the most predictable out-of-pocket costs. Once the deductible is met, nearly all costs are covered.

  • Part A deductible & coinsurance

  • Part B coinsurance (20%)

  • Skilled nursing facility care

  • Foreign travel emergency care (up to plan limits)

  • Part B excess charges

Plan N

Lower Premium, More Cost Sharing

A solid option for people who want lower monthly premiums. You pay copays for some doctor and ER visits. Does not cover Part B excess charges.

  • Part A deductible & coinsurance

  • Part B coinsurance (you pay small copays for some visits)

  • Skilled nursing facility care

  • Foreign travel emergency

  • Does not cover: Part B deductible or excess charges

Plan A

Basic Core Coverage

The most minimal Medigap Plan. Good for people who want some help, but are okay with higher out-of-pocket costs.

  • Part A coinsurance and hospital costs

  • Part B coinsurance

  • Blood (first 3 pints)

  • Hospice care coinsurance

  • Does not cover: Part A deductible, Part B deductible, skilled nursing, or foreign travel

Want Even More Complete Coverage?

Dental, vision, hearing, and protection against serious illness aren’t included in Medicare or Medigap plans. That’s where additional coverage options like DVH and CHAS can help round out your protection.
